666 - The Number of the Beast

666The number 666 has been associated with bad luck, evil, and even the Devil himself for centuries.  The number is also referred to as the Number of the Beast and can be traced back specifically to the Book of Revelation in the New Testament of the Christian Bible.  In the Bible, the direct King James version translates the original Greek to, β€œLet him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

There is some skepticism, however, since modern studies have shown that the original writings may have used the number 616 or 665 rather than 666.  Scholars have also argued that the number itself is not a synonym for the Devil, but for figures and rulers of that time about who open criticism could result in severe punishment, even death.  So, the number 666 – the Number of the Beast – may not be the antichrist, but an ancient ruler.

Scholars of numerology have hypothesized that the number 666 is the numerical value for the Roman Emperor Nero.  When his name was written in Hebrew and gematria used to interpret it, Nero would be equivalent to 666.  The hypothesis that 666 is used to represent a Roman emperor, probably Nero, does actually hold some water.  Historically, the Romans were extremely oppressive to the Jews and Christians, both of which used numerology.  In those ancient times, Jews and Christians used numerology to interpret the world around them but also to communicate with each other while avoiding persecution.

The meaning of the number 666 has been debated for centuries and will probably be debated until the end of time.  No one will ever know for sure if it is truly the Number of the Beast or not.  We may also never know exactly what or who the Beast is.  Is the Beast an ancient Roman ruler?  Perhaps it is an ancient Christian priest who defied the Church.  Or is the Beast Satan himself?  The number is also associated with a mark, which the Bible does not clearly explain.  Experts advise us not to speculate too much about who or what the Beast is.

Despite its ancient birth, the number 666 still has resonance in modern day society and culture, especially that of the West.  Many modern people in Western societies believe that the number 666 is actually the number of the Devil, or Satan.  In fact, many modern people exhibit a fear of the number 666, which is referred to as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.  The fear of the number 666 is so deep rooted in the modern Western psyche that many people refused to engage in any dangerous activities on June 6th, 2006 (6/6/06).  Many expectant mothers also expressed fear about giving birth on the date as well.  This modern phobia of the number 666 may be preserved as it is popularly the topic of many horror movies and novels.
